[1976] A TRICK OF THE TAIL - GENESIS

En el álbum A Trick Of The Tail

La letra del tema:

Bored of the life on the city of gold
Hed left and let nobody know.
Gone were the towers he had known from a child,
Alone with the dream of a life
He travelled the wide open road,
The blinkered arcade,
In search of another to share in his life.
Nowhere.
Everyone looked so strange to him.

They've got no horns and they've got no tail
They don't even know of our existence.
Am I wrong to believe in a city of gold
That lies in the deep distance, he cried

And wept as they led him away to a cage
Beast that can talk, read the sign.
The creatures they pushed and they prodded his frame
And questioned his story again.
But soon they grew bored of their prey
Beast that can talk?
More like a freak or publicity stunt.
Oh
No.

They've got no horns and they've got no tail
They don't even know of our existence.
Am I wrong to believe in a city of gold
That lies in the deep distance, he cried

And broke down the door of the cage and marched on out.
He grabbed a creature by the scruff of his neck, pointing out:
There, beyond the bounds of you weak imagination
Lie the noble towers of my city, bright and gold.
Let me take you there, show you a living story
Let me show you others such as me
Why did I ever leave?

They've got no horns and they've got no tail
They don't even know of our existence
Am I wrong to believe in a city of gold
That lies in the deep distance, he cried
And wept.

And so we set out with the best and his horns
And his crazy description of home.
After many days journey we came to a peak
Where the beast gazed abroad and cried out.
We followed his gaze and we thought that maybe we saw
A spire of gold - no, a trick of the eye that's all,
But the beast was gone and a voice was heard:

They've got no horns and they've got no tail
They don't even know of our existence
Am I wrong to believe in a city of gold
That lies in the deep distance

Hello friend, welcome home.

THE INHERITORS

1955

[1976] SQUONK - GENESIS

En el álbum A Trick Of The Tail

El texto:

Like father like son
Not flesh nor fish nor bone
A red rag hangs from an open mouth.
Alive at both ends but a little dead in the middle,
A-tumbling and a-bumbling he will go.
All the kings horses and all the kings men
Could never put a smile on that face.

Hes a sly one, he's a shy one
Wouldnt you be too.
Scared to be left all on his own.
Hasn't a, hasn't a friend to play with, the ugly duckling
The pressure on, the bubble will burst before our eyes.
All the while in perfect time
His tears are falling on the ground
But if you don't stand up you don't stand a chance.

Go a little faster now, you might get there in time.

Mirror mirror on the wall,
His heart was broken long before he ever came to you.
Stop your tears from falling,
The trail they leave is very clear for all to see at night
All to see at night.

In season, out of season
What's the difference when you don't know the reason.
In one hand bread, the other a stone.
The hunter enters the forest.
All are not huntsmen who can blow the huntsmans horn
By the look of this one youve not got much to fear.

Here I am, Im very fierce and frightening
Come to match my skill to yours.
Now listen here, listen to me, don't you run away now
I am a friend, I'd really like to play with you.
Making noises my little furry friend would make
Ill trick him, then I'll kick him into my sack.
You better watch out... you better watch out.

Ive got you, Ive got you, you'll never get away.

Walking home that night
The sack across my back, the sound of sobbing on my shoulder.
When suddenly it stopped,
I opened up the sack, all that I had
A pool of bubbles and tears - just a pool of tears.

All in all you are a very dying race
Placing trust upon a cruel world.
You never had the things you thought you should have had
And you'll not get them now,
And all the while in perfect time
Your tears are falling on the ground.

The squonk is of a very retiring disposition and due to it's ugliness, weeps constantly. it is easy prey for hunters who simply follow a tear-stained trail. when cornered it will dissolve itself
Tears.
True or false?

Inspirado en la criatura legendaria del folklore estadounidense, recogida en Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, With a Few Desert and Mountain Beasts, de William T. Cox, 1910.

Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, With a Few Desert and Mountain Beasts
William T. Cox (EEUU – 1878 – 1961)
1910

[1978] NARNIA - STEVE HACKETT

En el álbum Please, Don't Touch

La letra del tema:

Things they taught you at school
Can sometimes disappear
Why do you disbelieve
The things I said were true
Of a land nothing planned
It just happens
Girls and boys who shout come out to play
With a queen cold as ice
You'd best take my advice
To steer clear of her charm
She's easily annoyed
What's that sound, you turn around
It just happens there are bells
And reindeer drawing a sleigh
There troubled with snow covered peaks
Till the end of time
We know you're a daughter of Eve
And a friend of mine - no
Yes I'm certain that you
Will influence the rest
She could turn you to stone
You're suitably impressed
And so easily led
There just happen to be repercussions
Months ahead
Oh there troubled with snow covered peaks
Till the end of time
We know you're a daughter of Eve
And a friend of mine – no

Inspirado en The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, primer libro de la serie The Chronicles Of Narnia, de C. S. Lewis.

[1978] LORDS OF THE RINGS - STYX

En el álbum Pieces Of Eight

El texto:

All hail to the Lords of the Ring
To the magic and mystery they bring
To the music in their story

All hail to the Lords of the Ring
To the magic and mystery they bring
To the lands of ancient glory

In the year of the Lords
The message came from above
The heavens opened with their mighty sound
that shook the people in the town

And so we came from everywhere
The young and old the rich and poor
To hear the legend of the magic ring
and of the powers it could bring, they sing

All hail to the Lords of the Ring
To the magic and mystery they bring
To the music in their story
All hail to the Lords of the Ring
To the magic and mystery it brings
May we someday wear its glory

And now the message is clear
As I became a Lord this year
And though the legend was pure fantasy
We still need the hope it brings, so let's sing

All hail to the Lords of the Ring
To believe is a wonderous thing
May we always sing their glory

All hail to the Lords of the Ring
To the magic and mystery they bring
To the promise in their story

Alusiva a Lord Of The Rings, de J. J. R. Tolkien

[1978] SCENES FROM A NIGHT'S DREAM - GENESIS

En el álbum ... And Then There Were Three

La letra:

Little Nemo rubbed his eyes and got out of bed,
trying hard to piece together a broken dream.
His visions lifelike and full of imagination
it's strange to think they came from such a tiny head.

Dragons breathing fire, but friendly.
Mushrooms tall as houses.
Giant Nymphs and goblins playing,
scenes from a night's dream, poor Little Nemo!

Eating all kinds of food so close to bedtime
they always made him have these nightmares, it seemed.

Helped young Washington in the garden,
cut the cherry tree down.
Now we all know that's not history,
scenes from a night's dream, poor Little Nemo!

"Nemo, get out of bed!"
"Don't tell me stories, I don't want to know!"
"Come on you sleepy head, we're waiting to go!"

Once he went to the 'Carnival of Nations'
dancing with the princess through the night.

Found themselves on a moving platform
ten ton weights above them,
seeking audience with King Morpheus.
Scenes from a night's dream, poor little Nemo!

"Nemo, get out of bed!"
"Don't tell me stories, I don't want to know!"
"Come on you sleepy head, we're waiting to go!"

[1979] FAINTING IN COILS - BILL BRUFORD

En el álbum One Of A Kind

Tema instrumental que tiene una narración de Bruford, tomando palabras de Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, de Lewis Carroll, extraidas de The Mock Turtle Story.

Las palabras:

Alice did not feel encouraged to ask any more questions about it, so she turned to the Mock Turtle, and said "What else had you to learn?"

"Well, there was Mystery," the Mock Turtle replied, counting off the subjects on his flappers, "Mystery, ancient and modern, with Seaography; then Drawling – the Drawling-master was an old conger-eel, that used to come once a week: he taught us Drawling, Stretching, and Fainting in Coils."

ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND
Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (Inglaterra, 1832 – 1898)
1865

Mock Turtle

[1979] JEKYLL AND HYDE - RENAISSANCE

En el álbum Azure D'Or

El texto:
Duplicated man, inside, double tied
Prisoner, he's back to back, face to face
Mirrored shadows always changing place
Separated man himself he divides
Opposite needs he can't see where to hide
A single double side - Jekyll and Hyde

This man was good, he was calm
He'd never do any harm
Gentle soul as you may see
As caring as he could be

Chorus:

Deep down inside he hides
A twist that we maybe missed
Confusion and nasty trick of fate
Might be the break
Don't find yourself too late
Now who's outside, inside, Jekyll and Hyde
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsty.com/renaissance-jekyll-and-hyde-lyrics.html ]
This man acid raving beast
His eyes, his rage unleash
He tears apart all at hand
Back to the wall is his stand

Chorus

Duplicated man, inside, double tied
Prisoner, he's back to back, face to face
Mirrored shadows always changing place
Separated man himself he divides
Opposite needs he can't see where to hide
A single double side - Jekyll and Hyde

This man unsteady and unsure
Where did he go before
Slightly afraid you may see
Forgetting who you may be

Chorus

Now who's outside, inside, Jekyll and Hyde
Now who's outside, inside, Jekyll and Hyde

[1980] MORIA - ANYONE'S DAUGHTER

En el album Anyone's Daughter

La letra de la canción:

Our journey was long,
to the gates of Moria.
We followed the sun,
we've been taught in golden past,
no one can last ,
in Moria.

We've got the key,
to the gates of Moria.
Step up and see,
there's no other way for you,
it's leading through,
throug Moria.

Gold never found,
in the ways of Moria.
Shimmering ground sings the demon symphony,
I had to see,
that Moria...

But we lost a friend,
in the floors of Moria.
Afraid for the end of their journey,
we had made,
but it's too late,
in Moria.

(solo)

Our journey was long,
to the gates of Moria.
We followed the sun,
we've been taught in golden past,
no one can last,
in Moria.

Gold of the ground,
that's the way of Moria.
Share ever' sound,
that's the demon symphony,
we had to flee,
from Moria.

Inspirado en Lord Of The Rings, The Fellowship Of The Ring, de J. J. R. Tolkien.

LORD OF THE RINGS
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (Sudáfrica 1892 – 1973)
1954 – 1955

Moria
[1982] FAHRENHEIT 451 - HAWKWIND
En el álbum Choose Your Masques

El texto:

In Lexington they're going to burn
The Library of Congress for charity
Round it's funeral pyre the flames will churn
As night and winter's darkness spurn
And threaten with their clarity

See the flames they're burning up
Burning so bright, Fahrenheit

Fahrenheit 451 Fahrenheit 451
The fun has just begun, Fahrenheit 451

Oh see the pages all catching fire
See the building shimmering now
It was like this when witches reared
Against the stake, we stood and peered
At such Aladin's caves of air
Oh I wish you could have seen us there
Spreading all around that funeral pyre
Watching the flames burn higher and higher

Fahrenheit 451, Fahrenheit 451
The fun has just begun, Fahrenheit 451

Fahrenheit 451, Fahrenheit 451
The burning has just begun
It's like a mushroom cloud on a sun
Fahrenheit 451
The fire's fierce theatre draws herds of folk
All willing to be hypnotised
Anemones of flames and smoke
Enchant us so we gladly choke

Fahrenheit 451, Fahrenheit 451
The fun has just begun, Fahrenheit 451

Basado en Fahrenheit 451 de Ray Bradbury.

FAHRENHEIT 451
Ray Bradbury (EEUU, 1920 – 2012)
1953

[1983] GRENDEL - MARILLION

En el álbum Script For A Jester's Tear

El texto:

I. Heorot's plea and Grendel's awakening

Midnight suns bid moors farewell, retreats from charging dusk
Mountain echo, curfews bell, signal ending tasks
They place their faith in oaken doors, cower in candlelight
The panic seeps through bloodstained floors as Grendel stalks the night

Earth rim walker seeks his meals
Prepare the funeral pyres
The shaper's songs no longer heal the fear
Within their eyes, [their eyes]

Wooden figures, pagan gods, stare blindly cross the sea
Appeal for help from ocean fogs, for saviour born of dreams
They know their lives are forfeit now, priestly head they bow in shame
They cannot face the trembling crowd that flinch in Grendel's name

Earth rim walker seeks his meals
Prepare the funeral pyres
The shaper's songs no longer heal the fear
Within their eyes, [their eyes]

As Grendel leaves his mossy home beneath the stagnant mere
Along the forest path he roams to Hrothgar's hall so clear
He knows that victory is secured, his charm will testify
His claws will drip with mortal blood as moonbeams haunt the sky

As Grendel leaves his mossy home beneath the stagnant mere
Along the forest path he roams to Hrothgar's hall so clear
He knows that victory is secured, his charm will testify
His claws will drip with mortal blood, as moonbeams haunt the sky

Earth rim walker seeks his meals
Prepare the funeral pyres
The shaper's songs no longer heal the fear
Within their eyes, [their eyes]

II. Grendel's Journey

Silken membranes span his path, fingerprints in dew
Denizens of twilight lands humbly beg him through
Mother nature's bastard child shunned by leaf and stream
An alien in an alien land seeks solace within dreams
The shaper's lies his poisoned tongue malign with mocking harp
Beguiling queen her innocence offends his icy heart

III. Lurker at the Threshold

Hounds freeze in silence bewitched by the reptile spell
Sulphurous essence pervades round the grassy dell
Heorot awaits him like lamb to the butcher's knife
Stellular heavens ignore even children's cries

Screams are his music, lightning his guide
Raping the darkness, d-d-death by his side

Chants rise in terror, free round the oaken beams
Flickering firelight portraying the grisly scene
Warriors advance, prepare for the nightmare foe
Futile their sacrifice as even their hearts must know

Heroes delusion, with feet in the grave
Lurker at the threshold, he cares not for the brave, he cares not for the brave

IV. Finale

So you thought that your bolts and your locks would keep me out
You should have known better after all this time
You're gonna pay in blood for all your vicious slander
With your ugly pale skins and your putrid blue eyes
Why should I feel pity when you kill your own and feel no shame
God's on my side, sure as hell
I'm gonna take no blame
I'm gonna take no blame
I'm gonna take no blame

So you say you believe in all of Mother Nature's laws
You lust for gold with your sharpened knives
Oh when your hoards are gathered and your enemies left to rot
You pray with your bloodstained hands at the feet of your pagan gods

Then you try to place the killer's blade in my hand
You call for justice and distort the truth
Well I've had enough of all your pretty pretty speeches
Receive your punishment
Expose your throats to my righteous claws
And let the blood flow, and [let the blood flow], flow, flow, flow.

Doble alusión. Por un lado a Grendel, de John Champlin Gardner, parodia del antiguo poema épico Beowulf, y por otro a The Lurker At The Threshold, de August Derleth y H. P. Lovecraft, en la parte III de esta suite.

GRENDEL
John Champlain Gardner (EEUU, 1933 – 1982)
1971

THE LURKER IN THE THRESHOLD
August Derleth (EEUU, 1909 – 1971)
Howard Phillip Lovecraft (EEUU, 1890 – 1937)
1945

[1983] HOME BY THE SEA - GENESIS

En el álbum Genesis

La letra:

Creeping up the blind side, shinning up the wall
stealing thru the dark of night
Climbing thru a window, stepping to the floor
checking to the left and the right
Picking up the pieces, putting them away
something doesn't feel quite right

Help me someone, let me out of here
then out of the dark was suddenly heard
welcome to the Home by the Sea

Coming out the woodwork, thru the open door
pushing from above and below
shadows but no substance, in the shape of men
round and down and sideways they go
adrift without direction, eyes that hold despair
then as one they sign and they moan

Help us someone, let us out of here
living here so long undisturbed
dreaming of the time we were free
so many years ago
before the time when we first heard
welcome to the Home by the Sea

Sit down Sit down
as we relive our lives in what we tell you

Images of sorrow, pictures of delight
things that go to make up a life
endless days of summer longer nights of gloom
waiting for the morning light
scenes of unimportance, photos in a frame
things that go to make up a life

Help us someone, let us out of here
cos living here so long undisturbed
dreaming of the time we were free
so many years ago
before the time when we first heard
welcome to the Home by the Sea

Sit down Sit down
as we relive out lives in what we tell you
let us relive out lives in what we tell you

Sit down Sit down
cos you won't get away
no with us you will stay
for the rest of your days - Sit down
As we relive our lives in what we tell you
Let us relive our lives in what we tell you

En el álbum Tubular Bells II

Instrumental basado en Sentinel, de Arthur C. Clarke.

SENTINEL
Arthur C. Clarke (Inglaterra, 1917 – 2008)

[1995] MY DEAR WORMWOOD - ECHOLYN

En la suite Letters, del álbum As The World

El texto:

My Dear Wormwood I'm pleased with your progress
I hear your patient is feeling doubt and is slipping
He's falling from grace at a nice even pace

My Dear Wormwood I'm delighted to hear
Your patient's made some new friends
We've checked them they're all clear
They're worldly, intelligent, and cynically secure

My Dear Nephew don't hurry your patient
You may awaken him to his real position
Let him think that his actions don't matter at all

The infernal police have informed me
you're patient's leaning towards the other side
You've got to bring us back some food Wormwood
or become food yourself

I've enclosed a booklet for incentive
On the new "House of Corrections for Incompetent Tempters"
You'll find every page to be far from dull

And in a moment you've let a soul slip through your fingers
I can hear the howl of sharpened famine
For it's loss echoes on and on through the kingdom of noise
There was a clearing of his eyes
and he knew what you had in him
We now have nothing! Oh the degradation of it!

My Dear Wormwood My Dear Dear Wormwood
I think the high command will give me a piece of you
I feel anxious to see you, I long to embrace you

Poppet fool, hunger drool
Ravenous for swine infernal
Forever damned serve your sentence
In eternal hell!

THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS
Clive Staples Lewis (Irlanda 1898 – 1963)
1942

[2000]  BRAVE NEW WORLD - IRON MAIDEN

En el álbum Brave New World

La letra:

Dying swans twisted wings, beauty not needed here
Lost my love, lost my life, in this garden of fear
I have seen many things, in a lifetime alone
Mother love is no more, bring this savage back home

Wilderness house of pain, makes no sense of it all
Close this mind dull this brain, messiah before his fall
What you see it's not real, those who know will not tell
All is lost sold your souls to this brave new world

Our brave new world, in a brave new world
Our brave new world, in a brave new world
In a brave new world, Our brave new world
In a brave new world, Our brave new world

Dragon kings dying queens, where is salvation now?
Lost my life lost my dreams, rip the bones from my flesh
Silent screams laughing here, dying to tell you the truth
You are planned and you are damned in this brave new world

Our brave new world, in a brave new world
Our brave new world, in a brave new world
In a brave new world, Our brave new world
In a brave new world, Our brave new world

Our brave new world, in a brave new world
Our brave new world, in a brave new world
In a brave new world, Our brave new world
In a brave new world, Our brave new world

Dying swans twisted wings, bring this savage back home

Alusión a Brave New World, de Aldous Huxley.
